ABOUT BELLEVUE

Bellevue is situated in the far southwestern corner of Eaton County, Michigan, adjacent to Highway M-78. It was the inaugural township in the county and served as the county seat from 1837 to 1840. The Village of Bellevue was formally incorporated in 1867.

Numerous families from Connecticut, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and Canada discovered an ideal location to raise their children and establish their legacies. The area boasted plentiful farmland and valuable resources, including limestone, which provided ample opportunities for earning a livelihood. In the early years, from 1833 to 1838, many residents of Bellevue were unaware of their neighbors until a stray cow wandered onto another farm, sparking valuable animal-brought friendships.                 

The initial settlement in Eaton County was established by Captain Reuben Fitzgerald in July 1833, in what is now the township of Bellevue. Fitzgerald's daughter, Sarah, was born on November 12, 1834, making her the first white child born in Eaton County.

Isaac E. Crary Hickok, son of Captain James Hickok, holds the distinction of being the first white male child born in Eaton County. His birth occurred on September 7, 1836. Captain Hickok, the first settler in the town of Walton, saw his son born in Bellevue.
