ABOUT PERRY

Josiah Purdy was the first settler in Perry Township, arriving in the fall of 1836. The Village of Morrice now occupies the north half of his land. Purdy constructed a log cabin, marking the first such structure built by a white man in the township. Located just east of the present Morrice Elementary School, the cabin was positioned along an Indian trail, where long lines of Indians would pass by. Initially unaware of the cabin, the Indians gradually became acquainted with Purdy and grew quite friendly, even stopping in during storms to spend the night..

They used to rest on the floor, and it was not unusual to see the floor almost completely covered by them. They would frequently depart without warning, leaving their firearms propped up in the corner of the room, and be gone for weeks at a stretch. Purdy never handled their firearms, nor did he permit anyone else to tamper with them, thus earning their trust..

In 1836, Purdy cultivated a small plot of land for a garden, believed to be the first land ever plowed in the township. Mrs. Purdy, also known as Diantha, passed away in 1866, followed by Mr. Purdy in 1868. They now rest in the Roselawn Cemetery in Perry Township.
