ABOUT OWOSSO

Alfred L. and Benjamin O. Williams were among the first European-American settlers in the region. They were later joined by Elias Comstock, credited with constructing the settlement's inaugural permanent residence. Dr. John B. Barnes, a respected physician and judge, and Sophronia King Barnes relocated to Owosso in 1842. Residing on the corner of Oliver and Water streets, they established an Underground Railroad waystation, offering assistance and refuge to enslaved African Americans.

Owosso achieved city incorporation in 1859 with a population of 1000 residents. The inaugural mayor, Amos Gould, a New York native and judge, led the city. A wave of settlers from New York and New England also made their way to Owosso. The city established its fire department in 1876.

The settlement and migration patterns led to Owosso becoming a predominantly white city. During the 1950s, a prominent newspaper from Montgomery, Alabama, documented Owosso as a sundown town, where African Americans were prohibited from residing or staying overnight.
